Week 12

Here chick, chick, chick The chicks continue to amaze us. They truly are mesmerizing. Scott and I love spending time with them in the yard. The chicks follow us in the yard and a few of them come when called by name. The chicks enjoying garlic infused water. Daisy posing so prettily The chicks seem to get along. They are almost always together. When one or two get separated from the group, they squawk to locate the others.   The chicks enjoy each others' company.  Home sweet Home

Week 11

Chick Days You might be wondering, "what do the chicks do all day?". Here's a glimpse into the lives of our chicks. You might be wondering why Scott is under the coop, he was attaching the wire fence and it got late and the chicks decided to cuddle with him. Exploring Scott designed this awesome ramp for the chicks to securely get in and out of the coop. Initially, the chicks needed encouragement coming down the ramp.  Soon they got the hang of it. Week 10

Chick Days The chicks are excited to come out of the coop each day. They are getting better at making the leap into the yard. The chicks run around the yard together. Lily and Verbena seem to be at the top of the pecking order. They are the biggest chicks by far and will top out at 10 lbs a piece. The other chicks will be 5-7 lbs. The other chicks don't seem to mind not being the lead chicks. Petunia often hangs out with Verbena as seen below.  Verbena and Petunia eagerly look for bugs as Honey takes the birds-eye-view.   The chicks spend almost all day exploring. We offer water dishes around the yard. Here the girls are meeting around the water cooler.  We read that the chicks will return to the coop each night. The evening we went to put them in the coop and they were all settled in. So cute! We have to yet to watch the chick parade at dusk, but hope to soon. 

Week 9

Coop Days!! The day has come, t he coop is finished "A thing of beauty is joy forever" - Keats The chicks are too gosh-darn big for the porch It is time to be in the coop, but they look so small. Huddling together for warmth or comfort? The chicks needed more space and are acclimating to their surroundings. They follow each other around the yard.  Here they found a place for dust baths. The chicks love the garden, I don't mind as it is the end of the season. Exploring a variety of perches and people!

Week 8

Chick, chick, chick, chick-chick! The chicks are getting bigger. Exploring their world from the canopy and supervised free-ranging. The chicks LOVE kale from the garden Running from the porch into the yard The chicks have great personalities. Violet hiding behind the water; I see you!   Marigold investigating my camera.  "Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my closeup." And then taking her nap in the sun. Marigold is a favorite, but onto the other chicks. Our Brahma favorites, Lily & Verbena. They often run across the yard into each other, like a chest-bump. Our favorite Ameraucanas, Violet & Petunia. These chicks are awesome explorers and they come when we call their names! The favorite Orpingtons, Forsythia and Daisy playing hide-and-seek. Daisy is one heck of a hider! The favorite Welsummers, Myrtle joins Marigold napping in the sun. Coop update: Shingled, painted, and windows installed. Honey

Week 7

The chicks are coming one by one, hurray, hurrah! Here comes Verbena! The outside temperature matches the heat lamp setting of 70 degrees. The chicks got to come outside,  and go under the canopy.   Grazing on grass, Finding where we've been getting the clover. Stretching their legs and their tale feathers, and lying in the sun.
