Oh yes, we're going the distance for this passion and interest. Some, okay many, people have told us we are crazy. They are just chickens;to us they are not. And while we are building the Magic Kingdom of Chickenland, we are learning a lot along the way.
Don't believe us, then listen to the chicks.

The question around the water cooler, "what's up with our coop?"
Do birds of a feather really flock together? While the chickens do pair off, go solo, and hang out with the flock, they often do seek their same kind. They seem to have a connection, a way of being in sync. Check out Marigold and Myrtle: Judges' scores? 10 10 10 Look at that? A perfect score!
"I'm flying!" The chicks are getting their feathers already! Violet has emerged as the first flyer. She and Petunia can fly out of the open brooder bins! We put the chicks in an empty baby pool while we clean the brooders. Petunia and Myrtle eating chick feed. Violet and Lily drinking water. Lily checking out Myrtle The chicks love their herbs! Marigold can fly too! Petunia, Daisy, and Marigold sleeping in my hand. It was night-time, so the red light is more noticeable. The red light is a heat light to keep the temperature at 90 degrees this week. The temp was 95 the first week. The temperature gets lowered 5 degrees each week. Good night sweet chicks
Chick Days The chicks are excited to come out of the coop each day. They are getting better at making the leap into the yard. The chicks run around the yard together. Lily and Verbena seem to be at the top of the pecking order. They are the biggest chicks by far and will top out at 10 lbs a piece. The other chicks will be 5-7 lbs. The other chicks don't seem to mind not being the lead chicks. Petunia often hangs out with Verbena as seen below. Verbena and Petunia eagerly look for bugs as Honey takes the birds-eye-view. The chicks spend almost all day exploring. We offer water dishes around the yard. Here the girls are meeting around the water cooler. We read that the chicks will return to the coop each night. The evening we went to put them in the coop and they were all settled in. So cute! We have to yet to watch the chick parade at dusk, but hope to soon.
